Inhabiting the “hollow hills” or sidhe mounds, these pint-sized people eventually provided Europe with its ethereal fairy kingdom, though for long ages the Sidhe were as mortal as you or me, as recorded in the oldest Celtic histories. One English scholar wrote that he was “thoroughly persuaded of the former existence, all over the United Kingdom, of a race of men who were smaller in stature than the Celts, yet agreeing in all essential features with the fairies.” If, in fact, the fairy kingdom is based on a real historical race, it would be, as Jacque Val-lee once remarked, “crucial to any theory concerning the nature of the humanoids.” 17
